Periodontic in Arab, AL

Periodontics is the dental specialization related to diagnosing, preventing, and curing periodontal or gum diseases that affect the gums and jawbone. Gum disease can cause bleeding and painful inflammation. If not treated on time, it can cause bone damage and tooth decay. The infection is caused by harmful bacteria and plaque, a sticky, colorless layer that develops over teeth. The key to fighting periodontal disease is a committed oral hygiene routine. At North Alabama Smiles, we provide various periodontal maintenance treatments to keep your gums pink and healthy.

  • Scaling and Root Planing

Gum disease unresponsive to traditional treatment and personal oral hygiene practices may require an intense dental cleaning called scaling and root planing.

In this procedure, a small dental tool called a scaler is used to clean underneath your gum line to remove tartar and plaque. The tooth's root surface is then planed and smoothed. This enables the gum tissue to heal and reattach itself to the tooth.

  • Pocket Reduction/ Osseous Surgery

The gum tissues and bone should fit firmly around your teeth. This supporting tissue and bone get damaged when you have advanced gum disease, forming pockets around the teeth. In due course, these pockets grow deeper, allowing more bacteria to flourish. Finally, if too much bone is lost, the teeth will need to be pulled out.

Flap surgery can remove the tartar in periodontal pockets or decrease these pockets to enable better cleaning. This standard surgery involves lifting the gums and eliminating the tartar deposits. The gums are then stitched back in position so that the tissue fits securely around the tooth again.

A pocket reduction procedure is recommended if your oral hygiene regime and scaling and root planing procedures cannot reach these deep pockets effectively.

In some cases, osseous surgery is performed to level the uneven surfaces of the damaged bone and restrict areas where harmful bacteria can build up. This also allows the gum tissue to reattach to the healthy bone.

  • Regeneration

Periodontal disease can make the supporting tissue and bone below your teeth deteriorate.  Regenerative therapies can revive lost bone and tissue, reversing some of the damage caused by periodontal disease.

The procedure includes folding back the gum tissue and eliminating the disease-causing bacteria. Tissue-stimulating proteins and bone grafts can be utilized to boost your body's natural ability to regenerate tissue and bone.
